Collection: Emma Dunbar

Emma Dunbar is a contemporary still life painter and has been represented by Beside The Wave since 1999. Born in England, she graduated in 1984 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Printmaking from West Surrey College of Art and Design. Her work has also been reproduced internationally as greetings cards, posters, limited edition etchings and textile designs.

Dunbar works primarily in acrylic on board, occasionally incorporating collage and gold or silver leaf. Her background in printmaking informs her approach, particularly in her use of flat planes of colour and scratched-back surfaces that reveal underlying layers.
Her practice centres on still life and everyday subject matter, with a focus on colour, pattern and simplified form rather than strict visual accuracy. Drawing inspiration from daily life, seasonal changes and observed colour combinations, her work explores the decorative and expressive potential of familiar objects. Influences include artists such as Mary Fedden, Milton Avery and Daphne McClure.
