Collection: Richard Tuff

Richard Tuff (b. 1965, Manchester) is a contemporary British painter best known for his evocative depictions of the Cornish landscape. He studied Textile Design at Winchester School of Art, a background that continues to inform his strong sense of composition, pattern, and colour. After an early career in commercial design, Tuff relocated to Cornwall in 1988.

Settling into the coastal environment, Tuff began to focus increasingly on painting, drawing inspiration from the harbours, villages, and shifting light of the Cornish coastline. His work centres on places such as Mousehole, Porthleven, and Cadgwith, though travels to locations including Morocco and France have also influenced his palette and approach to light.

Tuff’s paintings are characterised by a distinctive balance between simplification and structure. He reduces forms into carefully arranged shapes, using harmonious and often vibrant colour to convey atmosphere rather than strict realism. Rooted in observation but refined through memory and design sensibility, his compositions prioritise mood and the essence of place.

Beside The Wave has proudly represented Tuff since 1989. Over the course of his career, he has built a strong following among collectors all over the world. Working across original paintings and drawings, he occupies a recognised place within contemporary British landscape painting, valued for his ability to capture the enduring character and light of Cornwall with clarity, warmth, and restraint.
